Richard E. Johnson, PINP, Inc

Rick Johnson is a consultant specializing in workforce and human resource issues, strategic planning, human resource business models, health and productivity initiatives and employee benefits.  Prior to forming his own company, Mr. Johnson served as the U.S. Flex/Health/Group Practice Leader for The Mercer Companies. In that capacity, he ran the largest health consulting practice in the world and also served as the primary consultant for a number of clients.

 

His primary focus is bringing business acumen to HR initiatives and enhancing work force health and productivity.  Much of his focus is integrating disparate programs, such as absence-health-disability-workers compensation- safety. Mr. Johnson is the author of four books covering human resources strategy, flexible benefits and health utilization management.

 

Alan R. Nelson, MD, MACP

Dr. Alan R. Nelson is an internist-endocrinologist who was in private practice in Salt Lake City, Utah until becoming chief executive officer of the American Society of Internal Medicine (ASIM) in 1992. Following the merger of ASIM with the American College of Physicians (ACP) in 1998, Dr. Nelson headed the Washington Office of ACP-ASIM until his semi-retirement in January, 2000, and currently serves as Special Advisor to the EVP/CEO of the College.

 

Dr. Nelson was appointed to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) from 2000 to 2006.  MedPAC advises the United States Congress on Medicare policies around payment, quality and access to care.  A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences (IOM), he was Chair of the IOM committee on Ethnic and Racial Disparities in Health Care and is a co-editor of the study report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care (2003).

 

Dr. Nelson was president of the American Medical Association in 1989-90 after serving two years as Chair of the Board and was President of the World Medical Association in 1991-92. Dr. Nelson attended Utah State University, and received his MD degree from Northwestern University.

 

Robert J. Rubin, MD, FACP, Georgetown Nephrology & Hypertension

Dr. Robert J. Rubin is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and an independent healthcare consultant. Prior to becoming an independent consultant, Dr. Rubin was president of The Lewin Group, an international health care consultancy, for 17 years. This consulting practice evolved from ICF, Lewin-ICF and Lewin-VHI. In addition, Dr. Rubin was Medical Director of Value Rx from 1994 - 1996.

 

Dr. Rubin has extensive experience in evaluating and establishing public policy in the health care field. Prior to joining ICF in 1984, Dr. Rubin was the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in the Department of Health and Human Services. In this capacity, he served as the primary public policy advisor to the DHHS Secretary, particularly in the areas of health care, welfare, Social Security, and social services. He was responsible for the development of the department's legislative program as well as for planning and evaluation initiatives. He was chair of the inter and intra departmental task forces responsible for the design, passage and implementation of Medicare's Prospective Payment System. Dr. Rubin also has substantial professional experience in the clinical practice of medicine.

 

As a healthcare consultant, Dr. Rubin works extensively with pharmaceutical, medical device and biotech companies to develop strategic and marketing plans for new devices and drugs. He also works with physician groups and providers of nephrologic services. In addition, he has and continues to advise several government agencies on health care policy. Dr Rubin received his MD from Cornell University Medical College and A.B. from Williams College.

Dan L. Crippen

Dan L. Crippen served, until January 3, 2003, as the fifth director of the Congressional Budget Office. Dr. Crippen, who was appointed in February 1999, has served in senior positions in the White House and the United States Senate and is a specialist in issues relating to the federal budget, health care and retirement.  From 1987 to 1989, Dr. Crippen served as an adviser to President Reagan on all issues relating to domestic policy, including the preparation and presentation of the federal budget. In the Senate, he served as chief counsel and economic policy adviser to the Senate Majority Leader from 1981 to 1985. He has provided service to several national commissions.

 

Dr. Crippen also has substantial experience in the private sector. Before joining CBO, he was a principal with Washington Counsel, a law and consulting firm. He has also served as executive director of the Merrill Lynch International Advisory Council and as a founding partner and senior vice president of the Duberstein Group.

 

He is a consultant for health care providers including developers of cardiac devices and bio-engineered pharmaceuticals. He serves on several boards of companies in the health care industry, both public and private; serves on the national nominating committee for the National Association of Securities Dealers; conducts research on health care; and contributes articles to journals and newspapers.
